Club Spotlight: How Essex Roads Cycling Club Embraced Cyql
Essex Roads Cycling Club has been around since 1903. That’s a long time, long enough to have seen just about every shift in cycling culture, road infrastructure and club life you can imagine. Through all of it, the club has kept going by being straightforward about what matters: good rides, good people and a willingness to try things that actually help cyclists to make their hobby easier.
A Club Built on Community
Essex Roads Cycling Club has 95 members today, a friendly, inclusive mix of cyclists of all abilities. From casual social rides to competitive events, the club balances its long tradition with a genuine willingness to evolve. That openness to change is exactly what led committee members to start exploring digital platforms that could better support their riders. The club’s digital journey is guided in part by a committee member with a particular interest in how technology can improve communication, road safety and who understands both the practical and human sides of club life.
Finding the Right Platform
The Essex Roads Cycling Club came across Cyql while searching for tools that could meaningfully support incident reporting, route awareness and member engagement. Many platforms were considered, but Cyql stood out for one key reason: “The platform stood out as being designed specifically with cyclists in mind,” the committee member explains. Following the committee’s decision to adopt Cyql, 81% of the club’s 95 members registered on the platform, achieving that kind of engagement with a new digital tool is no small thing and it shows genuine enthusiasm.
Turning Experiences Into Insight
We asked The Essex Roads committee what they value most about Cyql and the answer was really simple: “The ability to capture what actually happens on the road“. Cyclists encounter hazards, near-misses and road surface problems every time they ride. Without a structured way to log these experiences, that knowledge doesn’t matter. Cyql changes that, by giving members a simple, purpose-built way to record and share real-world information that can then be used constructively by the club.
Room to Grow
The main thing Essex Roads would like to see more of is feedback. When a member logs a hazard or reports an incident, they want to know if it went somewhere that someone looked at it or that it contributed to a change. That kind of follow-through would make a real difference to how much members engage with the platform. They’d also like to see the app keep getting easier to use as it grows. With 81% of members already on board, the bar is high and they want it to stay that way.
A Message to Other Clubs
If you’re a club deciding whether Cyql is worth it, Essex Roads would give you a simple answer:
“Cyql offers cycling clubs and organisations a practical way to turn everyday riding experiences into meaningful data and insight,” they say. “It helps give cyclists a collective voice while supporting safer, better-informed decision-making.”
And coming from a club that’s been figuring out how to ride well together since 1903, that’s not nothing.
